It’s Time to Stop Kathleen Wynne and her Liberal Government’s Plan to Privatize Public Transit in Ontario

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne claims she will champion a progressive platform in the upcoming provincial election, yet her Liberal government is moving forward with a destructive privatization plan that could lead to service cuts and fare hikes for everyday Ontarians. Committed to keeping transit public, workers and advocates are sounding the alarm about Kathleen Wynne’s plan to privatize public transit projects in Ontario.

“Millions of Ontarians rely on public transit everyday to live, work and play,” said Paul Thorp, President of Amalgamated Transit Union Canada. “Ontarians know the privatization of public transit projects could very well lead to higher fares and service cuts – all while increasing profits for large corporations.”

Starting today, advertisements will hit radio airways in the Greater Toronto Area and online calling on the Liberal government to keep transit public – for the sake of Ontarians.

Hear the advertisement for yourself:

“The Liberal government refuses to listen to the hardworking public transit workers and listen to their concerns about the future of public transit,” said Mr. Thorp. “We are calling on the Liberal government to halt their plans to privatize transit. With so much on the line, Ontarians cannot afford more delays from the Wynne government.”

The Keep Transit Public campaign began when Metrolinx has established a new tendering process that will restrict bids for future transit projects to those that can provide all the components of construction and operation. These include: Finance, Design, Build, Operation and Maintain.

Given that public transit companies do not finance, design or build, they are ineligible to compete in the tendering process. To add insult to injury, the government will not consider public transit companies to operate and maintain new transit. This drastic change by Metrolinx restricts the tendering process to include only large groups of private companies.

Together, we can stop Kathleen Wynne and her Liberal government from privatizing transit in Ontario.
